With over 100km of trapline to check, Jessie and I had our work cut out, just getting around the whole line.
Our trapline had worked, we had the main dingo packs rattled and the survivors were on the move. This is the time when you need to remain focussed, improve your set patterns and get ready to finish the job.
The wild dogs that killed old Chocky had been through our area often. About two years ago, the Alpha male of the pack was a very trap shy and cunning dog known as "Saddleback" due to his colouration. This is the story about this trapping session in two parts.
The trapline was working but the weather had other ideas. Make every opportunity count and hang in there was all we could do.

Hunting Wild Dogs in Australia. Using thermal optics and a night vision scope - Another wild dog bites the dust. Plus a few bonus Foxes and Rabbits whilst I was out hunting. These feral pests (wild dogs) can be a huge challenge for the hunter to target. They are extremely in-tuned with their environment and super spooky to get within ethical shooting range of. Every wild dog that is reduced is a huge win for our agricultural industry and native animals.
This was also the maden run for my new XEYE E3Max thermal scanner, very impressed with it so far.
Hunting Wild Dogs in Australia. Another breeding pair of wild dogs removed last night with the 204 Ruger fitted with a thermal scope. These elusive evasive feral pests can be a huge challenge for the hunter to target. They are extremely in-tuned with their environment and super spooky to get within ethical shooting range of, even with passive night hunting equipment. Every wild dog that is reduced is a huge win for our agricultural industry and native animals. As you will see in the video these wild dogs were eating a native Australian Wombat which they would have killed.
I seem to get some strange questions around the hunting of these wild dogs. They are interbred over generations between escaped domestic animals and our Australian dingo. In Australia they are an animal that land owners loath due to the damage they do.
No - A mature wild dog cannot be domesticated (yes I have been asked that). It would be like capturing a wild lion and attempting to make it a house pet.
Quick shooting trip out to a local property night hunting foxes and wild dogs with the thermal gear. Some of these small blocks can be very productive if you get the timing right. Getting the drop on cagy wild dogs when small block hunting can be very hit and miss. Worth the effort though and you won't get results sitting at home.
Big boars were out and about on this ATV shooting / hunting trip. Also a bunch of foxes and some feral cats !!! I managed to smackdown a healthy tally of feral animals with my 308 Winchester and Thermion 2 XP50 scope. No doubt that rig is more than up to the task and it serves its role well on the larger pigs I pegged with it. The smaller animals, well you can't argue overkill is not ethical !!!
All the animals shot in the video are introduced, invasive feral species in Australia. These animals are being culled for pest control purposes. Whilst this is labelled a hunting video a lot of this footage is purely pest control shooting. There is no "fair chase" other than shooting straight and true resulting in the most ethical kills possible. I'm performing this role with professional equipment for property owners who grant me access and require assistance.
For those interested I'm shooting a Ruger American Predator 18" chambered in 308 Winchester. Fitted into a MDT Gen 2 LSS chassis and running reloads with 150 grain Hornady SST projectiles. My scope is a Pulsar Thermion 2 XP50.

Tough dogs and trap wrecking wild pigs, just what you need on your trapline. Well, game on we said.
This is my user impressions and review on the Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XG50 Thermal Rifle Scope. I've had this device from Pulsar in real hunting usage conditions, multiple times a week for a few months so far. It's an amazing thermal scope and well worth considering if you're in the market.
This isn't a "how to" video with boring unboxing and basic menu function explanations. This is my handle on the new XG50 as a shooter and user with a huge amount of thermal footage with animal species and distances for you to view.
Big thanks Pulsar in Europe and Extravision in Australia for sending me the new Thermion 2 LRF XG50 to play with. Without support from companies who are proactive in the hunting industry like this, these video's are mostly not possible with the speed tech is evolving.
